Even funner fact: The guys at Flying Frog gave me a couple bags of zombie martians to give out for our readers/listeners. You use them in Last Night on Earth/Invasion crossover games to represent martians that you've raised from the dead. Stay tuned to the site for details on how to win those bad boys.

Last Night On Earth is a pretty well balanced game, it typically looks really hopeless for humans early on but the finale typically comes to the last few turns.

Fun fact, at PAX I saw their new game coming out....very similar to LNOE but it's a Martians invading a Circus theme. awesome.

I think you are over-stating the luck element of San Juan. With greater experience with the cards, you can definitely mold your game to what cards you are getting and your valuation of the different buildings changes. Certainly luck in getting all the best pieces of a strategy is there, and the bonus points for getting the right big building can often be key, but more often than not, the best San Juan player will win.

As an example, the early buzz around the game was that Guild Hall (big building giving bonus for each production building) was the key card in the game, but I have beaten that approach many times.

I do like where San Juan sits in the hierachy of the Puerto Rico type games though, certainly easier to play than PR itself or Race for the Galaxy.

I just learned and played this game recently. I thought I was doing well and ended the game having 12 buildings, but my opponent with only 7 buildings beat me in the points. This game quickly found itself on my list...and I've been thinking about it a lot recently. Thanks for the review!

Yeah, Forbidden Island is also a great suggestion. With the kids in high school, I went with the more advanced version, but Forbidden Island is good, too. And very affordable.

@Curious, if game nights start to become popular with your family, you could also look into many of the games that Jay recommends. Let us know how it goes!

I think Pandemic is a fine game, though I am not convinced it's a great first timer game. The rules can actually be hard to decipher if you aren't playing with someone who's played before.

I'd actually recommend Matt Leacock's Pandemic rip-off Forgotten Islands. It has the same mechanics, the same co-operative play, but is much simpler to play and explain.

Ticket to Ride, Carcasonne and Settlers are great gateway drugs....er...games of course. You could also throw Alhambra, Bohnanza, Through the Desert, Elfenland into the mix as games that are easy to explain and to play (though strategies might require more experience!)

It's a good thing you repost these at BGG. I don't make the site rounds as often as I should.

I'm another one who, while I didn't hate it, thought it meh at best at first. The more plays, the better I (we) like it.

I also share your thought on Stone Age. I already have PR and other similar games, so I have no overwhelming desire to try it.

There is a certain amount of satisfaction in everyone teaming up against the board. Pandemic is another great cooperative game.

But, when there must be winners and losers, I think its best to play to win. When everyone is on their "A" game, I think the game tends to be a lot more fun.

I tend to play to win, though I get more enjoyment out of games that are won collaboratively, like Arkham Horror or Betrayal at House on the Hill. I like it when we team up against a big baddie or in the case of BaHotH, against a traitor.

The only time I play "just for fun" rather than to win according to the given rules of the game is Scrabble. I play to make the most interesting or clever words, regardless of how many points they score, or where on the board they should go. But that only screws over myself, and everyone else can carry on scoring however they want. I've never won at Scrabble, but I still make the best words.

@GeekInsight - I'd say so. The (mostly) fixed camera solves the first issue, and perhaps the second, since you can more easily tell what you have to do. If you liked the idea of Tomb Raider, grab the demo.

I got turned off by the Lara Croft games early on. The camera angling was horrible and some of the platforming puzzles were just annoying. Is this worth taking a second look at the series?

Good take on Stone Age. I haven't had a chance to play it, but the fact that its' a bit like Puerto Rico has thus far made me think, "It's like Puerto Rico? I already have a Puerto Rico."

Maybe I'll give it a try, though, if it helps with the less gamey gamers.

Puerto Rico is a great game, but everyone who isn't a hardcore gamer type in our group hates it. They think it's too long and too boring.

Stone Age, which has some similar mechanics but is a much simpler game, goes over much much better with that group. It also plays a bit quicker...personally a big fan of Stone Age, although obviously it lacks some of the depth/complexity of Puerto Rico.

Hey, thanks! I know it'll take all the drama out of it and everything but you can't actually die in the story.

Hmmm. This time, anyway.

I saw a fun thread in a forum recently where people were picking one of the Title-O-Tron titles and then writing five sentences to describe the story. That was a such neat idea that I'm thinking about ways to make an embeddable version for just that use.

Nice review. On the technical hiccup side, if anyone encounters lag trouble in the game while playing full screen, turn off Software Acceleration (I think that's what it's called - don't have the game installed).

I got stuck getting the Edge Games trinket (pictured above) because the acceleration lag made my character too slow to complete the puzzle. Turning acceleration off in full-screen (or playing in windowed mode) made the game a much more enjoyable experience for me.

@Toucan Sam - Don't worry, I had the same fear. In the pause menu, there's a [STATS] page. Under [Number of Deaths] is your high score.

@Auroch. Always nice to see a dissenting opinion!

I just do not see the appeal in Seafarers. It's the same as the base game, but now you build boats on water tiles instead of roads. And, whether the island you come to has a resource you need isn't that big of a reward. The best reward is the bonus VP you get for being the first to build there. So it's always a good idea to invest in ships - so everyone has the same strategy in every game.

As for C&K, it is no easier to get locked out in C&K than it is in the base game. And, there's a lot more depth between which direction you're attempting to build your civilization. It also adds strategy with the knights - especially since they can bounce the robber if he is on your land.

Most of the Traders modules are compatible with seafarers (but not C&K), so if you get the opportunity, I'd recommend a play through some of the scenarios. Fishermen of Catan, in particular, would likely be up your alley. But some of the bigger modules do add additional mechanics - like barbarians taking over hexes and rendering them useless - so if you like the simpler (more elegant?) Catan, you may want to avoid those particular variants.

I disagree with you completely.

Seafarers adds exploring uncharted territory, which creates a dynamic between those who stay on the known islands and tech to cities and those who head into the ocean, increasing their risk (find nothing, waste resources) but also their rewards (get free stuff, find gold, get bonus points for settling on the island).

Cities & Knights, by contrast, adds the ability to get locked out of the game in the first 2-3 cycles around the board and adds much more complexity without adding much more strategy. Priorities change, but it doesn't increase the depth very much.

Can't speak about Traders, haven't played it.

A little of everything. I try games when I can, I've used the rental thing my local store has and played them with friends....sometimes I just take the jump and buy based on rep. It's burned me a couple of times (Shadows Over Camelot) but also been great (Stone Age).

Time will tell if Galaxy Trucker was worth the $70 (Ouch!) that it cost

I've tried a few things before buying, but oftentimes we just go on the recommendations of people we trust (which lately has been Gabe from Penny Arcade, thanks for Last Night on Earth and Pandemic!). We don't like to spend too much on board games, but we often put them on Christmas lists, and probably buy 2-3 a year.

My wife is the same way. She loves Pandemic, Agricola, Zooloretto, Carcassonne, and Castle Panic. We tried Defenders of the Realm recently and it is like a hybrid of Pandemic and Arkham Horror. Really nice game. My wife has also enjoyed Formula D, which was a little surprising to me.

She has expressed interest in picking up Dixit which is similar to Apples to Apples, but with amazing artwork.

She's going to PAX with me and I hope to expose her to some wider variety. She has even expressed an interest in getting into a beginner's D&D game!!!!

It's going to be a very interesting weekend.

All I'm saying is, if they insist on making porn 3D, they need to abolish some of the more awkward shots they always use.

Like the from behind close up of the guy entering the girl. The last thing I need is 3d taint and balls right up in my face.

I seriously cannot wait to see this. I hear the box office numbers have been disappointing, which is a total bummer. I'm crossing my fingers that it picks up steam and starts raking in the dough so studios will want to keep making these kind of things.

I'm really curious to see what the hell they do with Outsourced. This HAS to suck, right? I mean, there's no way they WON'T just go for the easy, "hey look those people are different than us, and also white people are awkward" humor, right?

Terriers I'm looking forward to, because Donal Logue has the comedy chops to make it pretty darn interesting.

I'm definitely interested in No Ordinary Family and the Walking Dead. I never heard of the Boardwalk one before, but I may need to look into trying to get my hands on it because I'm a Jersey Shore girl, but I have no HBO.

I'm not excited for the Abram's show (I never liked Alias) or for The Event.

@Rosalind - Real names? We just assume that the red disease is SARS, the yellow is ebola and so on. What names do you use?

Well, my first response was similar to yours... and I was going to link to the PiP Campaign... but you did that for me!

I disagree with both points. As a family man, I think board games are very good for the family. Both as a social bonding venue, and because they are VERY educational and developmental for minds under 16.

I do agree that once you pass teen years, game are pretty much social recreational fun at that point.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to playing this with a special someone who's finishing her residency. I'm guessing it'll be up her alley.

I love Pandemic, and it is a huge hit at my parties which mainly consist of microbiology grad students and postdocs. Sometimes we call the bugs by their appropriate names. I like that the game is stacked in favor of the bugs, because I really like that's true to life, they are smarter than us and will always win!

The strategy I'm taking with my youngest kids (3y.o. and 4 y.o. boys) is getting them into sci-fi and fantasy early (eg: they LOVE farscape), and getting them into games that only involve dice. I'll add the board in a year or so.

My daughter's been a tougher sell on gaming. She loves sci-fi and fantasy, but she'd rather play electronic games than tabletop ones. I'm going to attack that when she gets back from camp this month by getting her friends interested, because they seem to be some of the way toward being tabletop gaming enthusiasts already.

@Rob - Yeah, we still need to get in a game with the expansion. Maybe at PAX we can throw down in the wee hours
