Variant: Painting up Blood Rage

br-minis

I had big plans. Big plans, I say! I was going to paint Blood Rage. The thing is chock full of miniatures and I have whole bottles of paint just waiting to be spilled on them. Unfortunately, life got busy and I haven’t been able to finish that project. But I started it. In fact, I finished the first phase: Monsters. So … while I’ve put off painting the clans, I can at least report back on monsters.

The fun thing about painting the monsters is that they were all unique. If I learned one thing from War of the Ring it’s that painting the exact same model repeatedly (up to 36 times!) just gets repetitive. Of course, unique models mean that I don’t get the same chance to perfect things, but I think it’s a good trade-off.

Although I tried to use the cards as a color guide, I ultimately decided to deviate in some significant ways. Many of the cards use the same color scheme throughout with only slight deviations. That works for art, but I’ve found that minis typically need a greater contrast.

But the minis had some great detail for the most part. The soldiers of Hel had torn clothes and one shoe missing, allowing me to paint necrotic flesh into those areas to bring out those details. The Frost Giant’s skin was a blend of blues and whites that turned out really nicely. It actually made me pretty nervous because I didn’t want to overpaint anything else and get it on the skin. Mixing that color again would have been difficult.

I really like how everything turned out, with one exception: the Fire Giant’s sword. Ugh, fire is just a ridiculous thing to paint. And, while I’m getting better (my first attempts were … not good), it’s still not where it needs to be. At this point, the fire is merely “meh.” It’s something that I’ll work on in future projects for sure.

These look great! You did a pretty good job on the fire in my opinion. The frost giants colour is really nice too
