5 Broken Cameras (2012)

Netflix Instant

Description: A moving documentary about a Palestinian farmer who chronicles his village’s nonviolent resistance to the presence of encroaching Israeli settlers and military. The title comes from the filmmaker’s numerous cameras that are destroyed by the Israeli military as he continues filming.

Reason to Watch: This is one of five documentaries nominated for this year’s Academy Awards. With it streaming free on Netflix 5 Broken Cameras makes for a very easy watch for all of those attempting to watch as many Oscar nominated films as possible. This is one I’ll be making time for soon.

Primer (2004)

Netflix Instant

Description: Quite by accident, and engineer builds a machine that can transport the user back in time. But his discovery comes with an ominous caveat: At the heart of this puzzling device, nothing is as it seems on the surface.

Reason to Watch: When discussing time travel films, there are several that seem to come up constantly. Primer is one of these films. Small budget, high concept, and very thought-provoking by all accounts, this film has been added very highly to my instant queue.

Sleepless Night (2012)

Netflix Instant

Description: Vincent is one of two French cops whose bold drug heist goes bad; leading the mobster whose cocaine they have snatched to kidnap Vincent’s son.

Reason to Watch: Sleepless Night is a film that I had been hearing about all year. A lot of online film critics have been raving for quite a while about how great this movie is. With a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes it seems like the consensus is that this is one of the better action films of last year. Now that it is on Netflix Instant the difficulty of accessing it has dropped to nearly nothing.
