Spike 2012 VGAs: The Last of Us Story Trailer
The Spike Video Game Awards (VGAs) were held just a few nights ago, and while they managed to make time to actually hand out the odd award, it seemed like a lot of time was given over to trailers and announcements.
Fortunately, one or two of the games featured were genuinely interesting. The Last of Us is a game many of us are watching closely – we’ve featured some of the trailers and gameplay videos for the game here in the past.
At this year’s VGAs, we were treated to a “Story Trailer”, which hints at more story than it actually confirms. We already knew, for example that civilization has been all but destroyed, after the Cordyceps fungus somehow managed to jump species and infect humans, turning them into violent monsters.
What we didn’t know was just how much of civilization had survived, and what form it takes. This trailer fills in some of those blanks.
There’s some kind of order remaining – Joel apparently starts out in an unidentified city. While it’s clearly being run the military, it doesn’t seem like a pleasant place to live, coming across more like Woodbury than a military base.
We also learn just how Joel and Ellie, the game’s other protagonist, meet; Joel has been asked or contracted somehow to smuggle her out of the city. Exactly why, and who contracts Joel to smuggle her out isn’t revealed. It’s implied that Ellie is more important than we’ve been led to believe. What looked like previously to be a story about two people trying to survive or trying to make their way to somewhere safe obviously has more going on than we realized.
The last of us is being developed by Naughty Dog, makers of the Uncharted series. It’s due to be released on March 15th next year for Playstation 3.
