Variant: It’s Time to Consider a Game of the Year…

It seems like the year just flies by. For those of you new to the site, every year I announce the “GeekInsight Game of the Year” for the best “new to me” game that I played that year. Last year, the honor went to Sentinels of the Multiverse. The year before, to Small World.

Since I can’t play everything that comes out in a given year, and because I (like most people) am always discovering older classics, I make it open to any game* that I played for the first time. In this case, “year” means the one year period between November 1, 2011 and October 31, 2012, because I like to announce the top five and the winner prior to the holiday shopping season.

As I went over some of my “new to me” games this year, it was an incredible list. It’ll be tough to narrow it down to the top 5, let alone pick a winner. So many good games came my way. Plus, the fact that I tend to favor playing a new game over a known quantity, has also expanded the options.

In any event, here are my “new to me” games for this year. Feel free to shout back with some thoughts about what should be a finalist (or what shouldn’t). I’ll be gazing at all of them intently while stroking my beard over the next couple of weeks.

    Since I think you had a big swing and a miss on last years game, I’m hoping to fix it this year with one of these games:

    * Trajan
    * Village
    * Mage Knight
    * Dungeon Petz
    * In the Year of the Dragon
    * Eclipse

    I don’t know how you manage to squeeze in so many new games in a year. I can never get as many going as I would like.

    I favor Glory to Rome. (If I only list one game, it makes my voice more forceful…right? :-) )

    @Lenny It comes at the sacrifice of not playing as many games repeatedly as I’d like.

    @Wolfie Mayhaps. And that is a good one to pick.

    @Ian Thanks for the suggestions. Its interesting, I become increasingly happy with my choice from last year. I keep playing it and have great experiences every time.
