SHIELD Casts First Female Role

In a follow-up to news over the past few weeks Deadline is now reporting that ABC’s upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. series has cast its first new role. The part goes to Ming-Na Wen, who will be playing Agent Melinda May. May is described as, “soulful and slightly damaged by her combat experiences, she is an ace pilot, a weapons expert and a soldier who can-and has-gone beyond the call of duty.”

It’s also been revealed that this character is taking the place of the character Agent Althea Rice, aka “The Calvary”, who was listed on the casting sheet breakdown I wrote about last week. As of now, there is no clear explanation for the change, although it’s likely something as simple as liking the actress and attempting to fit a role closer to her personality and strengths.

Right now the announced cast consists only of Ming-Na and Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, but I imagine very few weeks will go by from now until the end of the year without some word of casting for the show. Check back in for more information as it becomes available.
