All-Star Producing Team Brings Monsters to The CW

The Hollywood Reporter broke news on a new project being developed by The CW with several big names in entertainment attached. The show, currently titled Copeland Prep, will be a crime drama which “revolves around a premier secondary school so fiercely competitive that it’s turning its students into monsters — literally — and spreading the disturbing ramifications throughout the town.” Sounds to me like a mixture of Gossip Girl and the Buffy ”high school is Hell metaphor.” Not a whole lot to grab on to, a high concept that could work for several seasons but nothing that really grabs me.

Then came the information that made things interesting… in both the good and bad sense. The show’s pilot is currently being written by Bret Easton Ellis, best known for very adult and dark novels such as American Psycho and The Rules of Attraction. The show will be executive produced by Ellis as well as Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, whose Fake Empire has been responsible for The O.C., Gossip Girl, and Chuck, to name a few. Now the interestingly bad: Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has been hired on to be an “executive consultant” for the show. At this time it isn’t known exactly what her role would be creatively should the project move forward.

With such a group of creative contributors, I’m interested in seeing how this shakes out, even if I never watch a minute of the series. How does the eclectic group strike you? Sound off in the comments below.
