DC Universe Presents to Beat Us “Black and Blue”

DC Comics and I haven’t always seen eye-to-eye on this New 52 business, but when there was talk earlier this year that DC Comics was going to have an established character coming out of the closet, I hoped against hope that it meant my boyhood favorite, Blue Devil, would be back.

But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. (Just to confirm, Dan Cassidy was never gay. But his sexuality never played much of a role in his solo book or Shadowpact, so I thought it would be an interesting new level to bring to the character.)

Last week when I got home from my weekly pilgrimage to the comic book shop, surprisingly what captured my imagination wasn’t the comics I’d picked up, but a sketch in Comic Shop News.

Could it be? Blue Devil finally making his New 52 debut?

I grabbed my Sherlock Holmes hat and magnifying glass and hit the intra-ma-net machines to find out more.

My investigations led me to the DC Comics website, where I learned that the sketch heralds the debut of not one, but two DC heroes into the New 52: Blue Devil and Black Lightning.

Written by Marc Andreyko with art by Robson Rocha, October’s DC Universe Presents #13 brings Blue Devil and Black Lightning together in a mismatched superhero adventure spanning five issues.

Andreyko spoke about the project:

I can’t begin to explain how excited I am to be writing this book! When I first heard the high-concept, I was instantly writing scenes in my head. I’ve always been a fan of the ‘buddy concept,’ especially when it’s love/hate, and teaming these two seemingly disparate characters together makes for some great story dynamics. How did Blue Devil and Black Lightning meet? Why are they working together? Do they even like each other? All… well, ok, some… will be answered. Add in a bloodthirsty bad guy, a crazy drug, a guy in a demon suit and another who shoots electricity, mix well. Now enjoy!

This makes me very happy. I don’t know the first thing about Black Lightning, but I’ll happily read all about him if it means I get more Blue Devil. And who knows, if this arc is popular enough, maybe we’ll get an ongoing team-up book (I am totally speculating here)?

So make sure you grab DC Universe Presents #13 on October 17th. It’s sure to be a fun comic. I mean it’s got Blue Devil! What more do you want?

    I don’t know what you’re saying. I’m not sure if I’m reading sarcasm or not here… :)
