SDCC 2012 Photos: Wednesday & Thursday

For the past few years in my convention traveling career, San Diego Comic-Con has been the pinnacle of my journeying. I know the comic purists aren’t a huge fan of the crazed spectacle that the event has become, but that’s one of the reasons why I absolutely love it. To me, the mingling of comic book, video game, movie, toy, science fiction, and anime fans feels like paradise.
Sadly, due to other commitments, I was unable to attend every single day of SDCC like I’d planned several months ago. Only being able to go to the con on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday is like biting into a delicious hamburger and not getting any of the meat and cheese. Still, that tragedy hasn’t dampened any of my enthusiasm for the show. I’m glad to be there for the days that I can, as a portion of Comic-Con is better than no Comic-Con at all.
The insane crowds and lack of space to maneuver can make photography at SDCC a bit challenging. Trying to gain a cosplayer’s attention for a photo amid a horde of photographers and not causing a traffic jam is definitely tough. The count certainly isn’t as high as my recent Anime Expo set due to those factors, but here’s a look at some of the highlights from Wednesday’s preview night and the first official day on Thursday:

Ariel’s successfully converted more Disney icons to the hipster movement.

Legions of Walking Dead fans lined up to become a zombie at this Michonne photo op.

The popular Ame-Comi DC figures are brought to life by some talented cosplayers.

Elijah Wood was one of many celebrities making an appearance at SDCC.

Fook Mi and Fook Yu from Austin Powers.

Gandalf must have provided these giant troll statues for the con.

The fine legacy of SDCC slave Leia costuming continues in 2012.

David the Gnome is here to bring back all the memories of the show’s sad series finale.

Jupiter’s cock! Spartacus steps into the arena.

Silly woman! Don’t you know that you won’t like Lou when he’s angry?!

Mickey and company don’t stand a chance against an army of Disney’s villains.

You’ll know Comic-Con’s in town due to all the decorations in downtown.

I wish I had nerdy friends like this.

I foolishly thought this was Dr. Manhatten. I guess I should probably watch Prometheus.

Doot deet doot deet doot doo loodle doo…

Sean Connery may have aged, but Zed and Zardoz will live forever!

It’s not who they are underneath, but what they *DO* that defines them.

No, not a sad white penis. That’s Gooble from Yo Gabba Gabba.

A giant Red Ranger statue commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Power Rangers.

I briefly tried the Wii-U, which is definitely on my list of things to buy. However, photography duty called me away from the gaming fun.
