Fringe Showrunner Shakeup

TV Guide recently broke news that Fringe showrunner Jeff Pinkner will not return to the show in its upcoming fifth and final season. The story caught me, and likely most fans, off guard. Pinkner has been with the show since the beginning and has been co-showrunning with J.H. Wyman since season two. By all reports the split was amicable and came out of Pinkner’s desire to pursue other projects.

Although most people probably did not see this coming, the move does make sense on Pinkner’s part. Fringe will be returning for a 13 episode final season and the more time and effort Pinkner puts into the production the less he has to put towards what could be the show that will keep him employed for the next five years. Knowing that the show will stay in good hands with Wyman remaining (and taking on sole showrunner responsibilities) likely made the decision that much easier. I remain hopeful that Wyman will be able to guide the show to a gratifying conclusion.

Fringe season 5 premieres Friday, September 28 at 9:00PM on Fox.
