MTV Eyeing Move into Horror/Comedy Genre

In an exclusive news item that ran earlier this week, TVLine leaked that MTV is moving forward with a scripted television show based on the Scream franchise. The project is being headed by former MTV executives Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley, who are currently seeking a writer for the project.

What seems absurd to me is that the network would want to move forward with a franchise that made waves a decade ago and whose most recent follow-up (2011′s Scream 4) only made $40 million in the states. Above and beyond the questionable finances is that it is likely writer Kevin Williamson and director Wes Craven will have little or no involvement with the series should it come to air.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe that MTV has made several worthwhile forays into the scripted sphere recently. Their series Awkward, which I caught up with during its hiatus, will be returning soon much to my delight. On top of that I have been hearing some fairly positive things about Teen Wolf from people in the genre fan community. Chances are that this series will never see the light of day, but keep an eye out for more updates should the project gain steam.
