Advenced Review: The Incredible Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizza Boy TPB

I can sum up Dark Horse‘s The Incredible Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizza Boy trade paperback in three words: fun, fun, fun.

Okay, let’s set the scene: World War II saw a lot of mystical monsters seeking refuge in Portugal. Modern day, these critters peacefully live in the night, minding their own business and not interfering with the humans they live with. When the gentle balance is upset and things start getting rowdy, a middle aged werewolf, a young pizza delivery boy, a six thousand year old demon and the severed head of a gargoyle are the only ones to make things right again.

I have a soft spot for urban fantasy, and the creative team behind The Incredible Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizza Boy – Filipe Melo, Juan Cavia and Santiago Villa – serve it up with a healthy dose of yuks.

What really stood out for me was The Incredible Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizza Boy TPB didn’t read like a foreign comic. Coming out of Portugal (I understand it was translated to English for this edition) it was easy to read. In my experience, foreign comics translated to English are often jarring and don’t’ seem to flow with what I’m used to as a reader of comics from the States. This is not the case with The Incredible Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizza Boy.

This is a fun collection all round. Werewolves! Mad scientists! Pizza! What more could you ask for?

How about a foreword by John Landis (Oh, he’s just the director of a little film you may have heard of: An American Werewolf in London)?

The Incredible Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizza Boy TPB has earned a place on my book shelf alongside the likes of Hellboy, B.P.R.D., Criminal Macabre and The Goon. It really is that good.

If this sounds like your kind of thing, you can pre-order The Incredible Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizza Boy TPB now from anywhere that sells good comics.
