PAX East 2012: Star Command
During my travels through the gargantuan structure that is the BCEC at PAX East, I wandered into the room called the Kickstarter Arcade. Inside were a bunch of Indie games (both video and tabletop) that have either been funded or are currently being funded via the crowdfunding site, Kickstarter.
They seemed to have a bit of a rotating schedule for displays set up, as well as a big screen in the back to show videos. While I was in there it was pretty quiet, with only three video games on display. One immediately caught my eye: Star Command.
During the demo level I had to stop an alien invasion of my ship by assigning various crew to attack, heal the fighters, or repair the damage I was taking from the aliens’ ship. I also had to destroy that alien ship. There was a lot to do, and not all of the walking pathway or repair mechanics have been worked out yet, but it was still a lot of fun. I can’t wait for the full game.
I spoke with one of the guys doing the demo, and they said that they are actually big board gaming fans. It’s something you can feel when you play the game, which is a bit like a worker placement, tower defense hybrid. The art is a great 8-bit Star Trek homage (beware, red shirts!), and the sound that I could hear (it was loud in there) caught the setting and the mood very well. Apparently the game is actually meant for the iPhone, but the iPad seems like the perfect size for it. Word is they’re releasing it for some Android phones as well, so iLess people won’t miss out.
Check out the teaser trailer below, bookmark the website (here’s the link again), and definitely keep an eye out for this game’s release:
