To the uninitiated, Puella Magi Madoka Magica is simply among the best anime that aired in 2011 (in Japan). An overview of the story and why it was so good can be read in GFBRobot’s review. This anime was also affected by real events that happened at the time of airing. Episode 10, the last episode prior to the finale, was aired on the same day as Japan quake and tsunami. Due to this, the two-part finale was delayed to April 22, which happened to be the Roman Catholic Good Friday for 2011. Coincidence or not, certain scenes in the finale evokes parallels to both the earthquake and aspects of Holy Week.

Episode 5, the premiere, fully introduces the red-haired, spear-wielding, always-eating mahō shōjo (魔法少女, “magical girl”), Kyōko Sakura, who first appeared only very briefly at the end of episode 4. After this episode, all the major characters will have been introduced and the plot will progress based how the characters develop individually and in relation to each other.

Tune-in to NicoNico on April 6/7 for the English-dubbed premire of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. For a copy of this version of the episode, check-out the Volume 2 DVD/Blu-Ray.
