Arrow: Pilot Casting Update

TVLine has recently announced several casting developments for the CW’s new show Arrow. In a previous news piece, I broke the casting of Stephen Amell as the Green Arrow himself, but now it looks as though the CW has been busy filling out many of the other roles in the series.

First was the announcement that the CW veteran Katie Cassidy has landed the female lead in the pilot. Cassidy will play Dinah “Laurel” Lance, who is a young attorney with the City Necessary Resources Initiative. The character also shares a romantic past with Oliver Queen. Fans of the Green Arrow comic will know that Dinah Lance is the name of fellow superhero and love interest Black Canary. It has been noted by several other outlets that if you look at the acronym of City Necessary Resources Initiative you will get CNRI which is kind of the license plate version of Canary.

Soon after the casting of Cassidy came the news that The River’s Paul Blackthorne has landed a co-starring role as Detective Quentin Lance, father of Cassidy’s character. Quentin Lance is being described as “a gruff, determined city detective who believes true justice can only come from law and order.” This casting is in second position to his current role in The River, but with that show’s low ratings its future is definitely uncertain.

The cast has been rounded out by the addition of Jamey Sheridan as Oliver’s father Robert Queen, Susanna Thompson as Oliver’s mother Moira Queen, and David Ramsey as an ex-military man now working in private security for Oliver.

I’m pretty excited about the casting for Arrow. Paul Blackthorne is one of my favorite actors, and has been ever since he starred in The Dresden Files. Strangely enough, I just finished re-watching that show and it reminded me how well he brought Harry Dresden to life. I wish that show had lasted longer but watching it again made me thankful to have dishonline(dot)com, which is this free streaming site run by my employer, DISH. And not only does it have a ton of shows and movies, but a good number of them are available to non-DISH subscribers too. I just hope Arrow makes use of their casting and the show actually lasts.
