Sherlock Holmes has been a mainstay of popular culture over the past several years with two feature films and two British series based on the famous detective. Now CBS is throwing their hat into the ring with their own take on the classic characters in the new series Elementary. Deadline has reported that Jonny Lee Miller has been cast as the lead in the new series while their sister-site TVLine announced the casting of Lucy Liu as Watson.

Elementary will be a modern take on the story with the characters set in present day New York City instead of the classical setting of England. The pilot script is being worked on by Robert Doherty, who will also act as an Executive Producer on the project.

As a strange and pleasant coincidence, Miller, who is himself British, recently performed in London as part of Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein play. Miller’s co-star in the play was none other than Benedict Cumberbatch who is probably best known as the actor who is currently playing Sherlock in the BBC series by the same name.

*Another* Sherlock?? I was already reticent about the BBC series, but it’s turning out to be really good. Still. I’m assuming that someday every other show on TV will be Sherlock-based.

Let’s not forget the biggest Sherlock show in the US, that’s now wrapping up its run: House.
