Board Game News Roundup – A Changing of the Guard

I’ll be taking over part of the weekly news roundup from GeekInsight. As part of this slight change, please let me know if there’s a particular type of game or system that you’d like regular news on. [He's the king of the soft sell, folks: we're actually thrilled to have him throwing down on these news bullets. If you've got a scoop for him, send it in via that big Contact button and he'll take it from there! - Ed.]

  • In Dominion news, 3 sets have been announced. The first, Dominion: Base Cards, is a set of all the basic cards released for the game so far with new art. This arrives in early March and is expected to retail for $17.50 USD. The second Dominion : Dark Ages will be released at GenCon 2012 and will be a mega-expansion (rumored at roughly 500 cards). Lastly, next year will be a small box expansion, Dominion: Guilds, of which little information is available.

  • Those who have read GeekInsight’s recent review of Thunderstone: Advance and are looking forward to the game should be excited by this news bit. Participating FLGS will receive both promo cards (Avatars) and copies of the game to sell before its expected release date of March 12th. Your local store may have these pre-release events going on between March 2nd and March 8th

  • I wouldn’t normally comment on Kickstarter campaigns, but I listened to GeekInsight’s recent podcast and immediately backed Gunship. The game has already hit 38k$ (as of now) with 40 days to go. The creator of the game has already added some pretty sweet bonuses, like a 3-4 player expansion and many new cards to add to the game.
  •  Summoner Wars  has two new upcoming factions as well as reinforcement packs for 4 of the factions released with the Master Set. The cool thing here is that one faction is entirely based on mutations (the Filth), whereas the one is entirely based on Mercenaries (the …uh… Mercenaries). These new factions are rumored to be released in early March.

  • WizKids’ MageKnight, which previously sold out in 20 days, has officially announced a reprint slated for release on April 18th this year. I’ll be honest, I blinked and missed out on this one before suddenly it was unavailable. I’m hoping to find a way to play it this time around :)
That’s all for this week! Please let me know what other games you’d like to hear about!
