Powers: Pilot Update

Bad news for fans of the Brian Michael Bendis comic book Powers. At the recent Television Critics Association winter press tour FX president John Landgraf announced that the network passed on the produced pilot based on the comic. Landgraf went on to explain that writer Chic Eglee followed up on the network’s misgivings with an extensive rewrite of the pilot. Right now the network is contemplating the tough decision of letting the show die on the vine or investing the money to complete extensive but necessary reshoots. Landgraf and FX have been known for producing quality shows over the last decade. Although some of the shows have met untimely demises (Terriers, Lights Out) credit has consistently been given to Landgraf for his honesty and sincerety to critics, fans, and entertainers alike.

The current Powers pilot stars Jason Patric, Lucy Punch, and Bailee Madison.

While this is disappointing news, I think I’d rather they turn Powers into an Adult Swim cartoon than a live action show. There’s enough competition for crime procedurals anyway, and if Heroes taught us anything, it’s that the public attention span for capes is thin. A cartoon would be lower budget, and could go on for a few seasons. I’d like to see it sitting in a box set next to my Batman: The Animated Series and Animaniacs.
