Star Trek Heroclix: Tactics Preview: The Wrath of Khan

Howdy Clixers and the Clix-Curious.

Today we have a couple of special previews from Star Trek Heroclix: Tactics out of Wizkids/NECA, as we delve into Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, with the U.S.S. Reliant!

The U.S.S. Reliant weighs in at 75 points and, as a Federation ship, it has the Federation team ability:

When this ship is attacked by a ship marked with one or more action tokens, modify this ship’s defense value by +1. Uncopyable.

The U.S.S. Reliant kicks off with the Genesis Testing special power:

U.S.S. Reliant can use Charge. Give U.S.S. Reliant a power action; remove from the map up to three blocking or hindering terrain markers within 6 squares. If you remove at least one marker in this way, U.S.S. Reliant can use Smoke Cloud as a free action.

U.S.S. Reliant also kicks off with Incapacitate and a range of 6, and can target two ships at a time. To cause maximum damage to the scum of the universe, U.S.S. Reliant is armed with Dynoscanner Targeting represented by Exploit Weakness. Mid-dial, Reliant drops Incapacitate and Exploit Weakness, gaining Smoke Cloud and Support respectively.

Defense-wise, U.S.S. Reliant starts off with three clicks of Barrier before switching to Energy Shield/Deflection for the rest of the dial.

From here, we’ll move on to look at the second preview for the day, none other than the U.S.S. Reliant. Waitaminute whaaa…?!!

Unlike the Common U.S.S. Reliant, the Rare version represents when it was commandeered by the villain of Star Trek 2: Khan Noonien Singh.

In Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, part of Khan’s scheme to hijack Reliant was to implant Ceti Eels into the brains of Chekov and crew, making them more susceptible to suggestion. Well, it’s no surprise that Khan’s U.S.S. Reliant possesses a Ceti Eels trait:

If U.S.S. Reliant misses with a close combat attack, after actions resolve you may use Mind Control as a free action targeting the same target.

The Reliant’s dial starts by showing off Khan’s fearlessness with Running Shot for the first two clicks and then the majority of the rest of the dial has Plasticity representing the Reliant’s Graviton Anchors. Attack-wise, the Reliant kicks off without an attack power on its first click. Second click, the Reliant opens fire, smashing through the enemy’s defenses with Penetrating/Psychic Blast and then opens fire with Photon Torpedoes represented with Energy Explosion. On the final two clicks, Khan makes a last stand with Pulse Wave.

Khan’s Reliant defenses start out with Deflector Shields represented with Toughness. Mid-dial, the Reliant changes defensive tactics, switching to Combat Reflexes. Add to that the combination previously mentioned - Plasticity and Close Combat Expert - on its damage slot and you have all sorts of madness representing Khan’s augmented crew boarding the enemy’s vessel. On the final two clix, the Reliant picks up Perplex, representing Khan’s unpredictability in battle.

Khan’s Reliant also weighs in at 75 points, but instead has a range of 8. Khan’s commandeered Reliant is a totally different take on the ship.

That’s all we have for today’s HeroClix preview, but watch this space because there’s more to come.

Live long and prosper (Oooo… too soon?).
