World War Z May End Up As a Trilogy
In many respects, 2011 was The Year of the Zombie. We saw The Walking Dead TV show and comic book reach new heights in storytelling, which kicked off the inevitable stream of zombie-themed movies and television shows. Probably the most anticipated movie is the adaptation of Max Brooks’ World War Z, starring Brad Pitt. Of course, just as soon as it was revealed that this movie was being made, the overall synopsis was revealed to leave off the “aftermath” conceit—leading many fans of the book stymied (to say the least). But, the L.A. Times recently interviewed Brad Pitt, who revealed that World War Z might end up as a trilogy. This gives me hope that we may see all the key elements of the book that would be left out in a more trimmed-down, Hollywood-ized version of the film. Here’s hoping it comes true. *crosses fingers*. The zombie apocalypse is set to occur on the big screen when World War Z premiers December 21, 2012 (U.S. release).

I think it would be interesting to make it into multiple fillms, but no matter how you slice it up quite a lot of the vignettes from the book are not feasible for a traditional film narrative. Maybe if it were done in pseudo-documentary style, but the impression I’ve gotten is that Pitt’s character will see a lot of the things first hand instead of recounting people’s stories.
Also, FYI, that trailer is a fake. It’s not a bad edit, but most certainly taken from several other zombie and Pitt films.
You big tease, I got all excited there that an actual WWZ trailer had been released. Bad Ben!
Yeah yeah – I know the trailer is fake. But it’s still a nice fake.
When a legit trailer DOES release, I hope we post it. I’m excited to get a look at this film. For now, fanfilms will have to suffice.
And Billy, I think you could run this movie series forever. There are so many stories that could be told that you could build a franchise on the premise. Albeit, not with Pitt as the center for too long, but a franchise nonetheless.
I think that the best adaptation that could have come out of World War Z would have been a faux documentary that worked in tandem with the book, like a supplemental to the book. That way they could cover some things from the book and add new things as well. With the focus on Pitt as the lead I fear they will shoehorn his character into many of the things that happen in the book that his character wasn’t present for in the book.
But whatever, I love zombie movies and World War Z is one of my favorite books, so I’m there day one.
And Ben, as soon as a trailer is posted you can bet I’ll be posting a story about it!
