64-Bit World of Warcraft Client Coming Soon

It’s been hinted, teased, and requested for quite some time, but a 64-bit version of the World of Warcraft client is now available to test on the game’s Public Test Realms.

In layman’s terms, what does a 64-bit client mean? It means that those of us running Windows 7, or other operating systems that aren’t capped at 4Gb of RAM, are in for a treat. Plus, it’s like a whole 32 bits more than before, and that’s got to be good, right? Right.

With a 64-bit client, WoW should be able to cache more of the game to memory, reducing the need for the game to read large chunks of data from your hard drive.

Also, if you’re like me and you run fairly addon-heavy, then you may see a bit more stability. There are a few addons out there which chew up massive amounts of RAM, so this should help keep them in check.

You can grab the PTR client directly from the game launcher just now, should you so wish.
