Heroclix: Hulk Preview—Return of the King

Today’s Heroclix: Hulk preview out of Wizkids/NECA spotlights one time Hulk antagonist known as the Red King from Marvel’s Planet Hulk storyline.

Red King begins play confidently bursting onto the battle field with Charge and Blades/Claws/Fangs and, to make things even worse for the enemy, his Gigantic Reach Trait (enabling Red King to treat any character within three squares as adjacent for close combat purposes). Any joker foolish enough to find themselves within striking distance of Red King is in a world of pain.

Also, taking into account that Red King is a Giant-Sized Figure (and can ignore certain terrain under specific circumstances) he has a clear line of fire for his Gigantic Reach Trait, which makes bringing the pain so much easier. Sure, that also frees up the enemy to take shots at Red King, but that where his Impervious helps protect him.

And all that is only Red King’s early dial.

The Red King quickly drops Charge in favor of Plasticity to help hold his enemy in mortal combat as well as make it easier for Red King to break away if needed. He also picks up his Swat Special Power, allowing him to dish out knock-back damage every time he deals damage to the enemy. And if Red King is lucky enough to knock that character back into another enemy, both characters are dealt an additional 2 Damage. Red King’s pimp hand is strong!

Red King switches back and forth between tactics mid- to late-dial with Charge and Plasticity and gains Super Strength and then Quake respectively. Invulnerability replaces Impervious as Red King’s armor begins to power down. Red King then gains Toughness and Exploit Weakness late-dial, and at the end of his dial the Red King’s armor deteriorates more as his defenses give way to Toughness instead of Invulnerability. At this point Red King resorts to his Obedience Discs to defeat his enemies in the form of Mind Control.

Weighing in at 186 points, the Red King is a nasty piece of work whose bulk and brutality can stand toe-to-toe with the Hulk himself. And check out how big the actual figure is next to the jade giant.

Red King has decent combat values and great potential for damage output and I predict he’ll be getting a lot of play come December.

Wizkids/NECA have dropped another hint to what to expect in their next preview when they’ll “spotlight an incredible champion and one-time ally of the Hulk.”

As always, when I know something, you’ll know something.
