Hasbro and IDW to Launch Magic: The Gathering Comic Books
IDW and Hasbro, Inc. have announced yet another branch of the metaphorical tree which is their long-term relationship, with Magic: The Gathering, the comic book series. Based on the trading card game (TCG), the new comic book series will be the first in over a decade based on the Magic: The Gathering universe. Also, only available through select issues of the Magic: The Gathering comic book, you will be able to get your hands on “exclusive, playable, alternate-art cards.”
IDW’s Magic editor, Denton J. Tipton, says: “I’m really looking forward to telling new stories in the many worlds of Magic, which have been near and dear to my heart since the mid-90s.”
Working closely together every step of the way, IDW and Hasbro promise that the Magic comic book will enrich the experience of existing players. Initially planned for a four-issue miniseries, Magic will revolve around a new and powerful mage who can travel from world to world in the Magic Multiverse. Magic also promises to feature many of the popular characters from the TCG.
The Magic comic book will be written by author and game designer Matt Forbeck (responsible for The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game and also author of Amortals, The Marvel Encyclopedia). Forbeck is joined by Martín Cóccolo, who will handle the art chores. The Magic: The Gathering comic book will be “distributed to a wide audience through comic-book outlets, trade bookstores, mass retailers, and digitally through a variety of platforms.”
