Advanced Comic Review: Crawl to Me #2

From the very first page of Crawl to Me #2 I had goose bumps. The simple one-page spread on a staircase leading up to a closed door brings a sense of unease and sets a tone of uncertainty that carries through the entire issue.

From here, strap on your seatbelt because the trip down the rabbit hole has just begun.

When I reviewed IDW’s Crawl to Me #1, I knew I’d had something special and unique thrust upon me. I found the first issue mind-blowing and Crawl to Me #2 keeps the horrific and thrilling pace going with a number of “Oh my God!” or “What is wrong with that Alan Robert?” moments (in the best possible way, of course).

Alan Robert has a firm grip on what makes a horror comic great. I see an elegance and artful approach that reminds me somewhat of Guillermo del Toro’s Cronos and The Devil’s Backbone. The horror isn’t delivered in a schlock manner with gratuitous blood and guts. Instead there’s a grotesque beauty to the horror’s visuals that is very, very rare in the horror genre (including comics, novels, and films).

One other thing I want to mention is the colors. There’s a scene where Max (Ryan’s dog) is running around in the basement. With no lights, Ryan is forced to use his cell phone to light the darkness. It’s hard to explain, but the blues and white against the reds and browns are just breathtaking. Alan Roberts is a true artist.

I want to say so much more but, for fear of spoilers. I’ll stop now.

Just get to your local comics joint and reserve your copy of Crawl to Me #2. And if you haven’t read Crawl to Me #1 yet (What?!! I remember when you were cool) ask for it. You may be lucky enough to score that, too.

As a fan of the horror genre in all its forms, Crawl to Me is a unique tale that you won’t want to miss. Trust me.

Crawl to Me #2 will be on sale August 17th, 2011.
