MacGyver to Escape TV…And Break Into Comic Books This Fall

Lock me in a room with some duct tape, chewing gum, and some toothpicks and I’ll figure out a way to escape. Of course, I learned everything I know from watching MacGyver. According to Comic Book Resources, I’ll soon be able to take MacGyver anywhere, as the character is returning to pop culture in comic book form.

Image has secured Tony Lee and Becky Cloonan have secured the rights to publish a miniseries using the character from creator Lee David Zlotoff. Zlotoff has also signed on to help with the plot and script for the first series, but the series is credited as being written by Tony Lee, who is most notable for writing Doctor Who comics. The art is being handled by the talented Becky Cloonan. [Ed. note: Thanks for the correction, Tony!]

The series will span five issues and the arc will be titled “Fugitive Gauntlet.” The story revolves around MacGyver having a $7,000,000 bounty placed on his head, and every day that he lives the bounty drops by a million dollars. It’s in the best interest of the hit men to kill MacGyver quickly, and of course it’s in MacGyver’s best interest to figure out a way to survive, and also to figure out why someone wants him dead.

At this time, there’s no confirmation if the feathered mullet made famous by Richard Dean Anderson on the TV show will be how the character is depicted in the comics. “There’s a lot of talk about this, we were happy to do whatever Lee [David Zlotoff] suggested, and he was actually very interested in modernizing the character in the same way that Superman or Batman are ageless,” Lee said. One thing that is confirmed is that this modernized MacGyver will still be creating his gadgets and solving complex problems. Bring on the duct tape and toothpicks!

@ Tony – Thanks for the clarification.

I see now that you and Becky were huge fans of the show, and that this was a dream project of yours for years. I apologize for the error.

I think it is awesome that you are continuing the story of such a wonderful character. I’m looking forward to reading the series. Kudos! 🙂
