Feel the Thunder

Fans might be getting excited now, as the new series of Thundercats gets closer. I know this one is.

The show will be going to air on the Cartoon Network in the USA starting July 29th.

Those of us who were fans back in the ’80s may need a little memory jog to gear up for the ‘Cats again, and those who are new to them may want to know what this show is all about.

Luckily, even if you don’t have access to the Sword of Omens and its Sight Beyond Sight, there is a source of information readily available.

The good folks at IGN will be keeping us up to date each week with Thunder Thursdays. Bursting with interviews, images, and clips, this is the place to go for all your Thundercats needs.

According to the week one Thunder Thursday, the new series has retconned the origins of the series and characters slightly. Instead of fleeing their home planet to arrive on Third Earth (Lost in Space style), the ‘Cats traditional home of Thundera is a region of the planet. This has more of a Lord of the Rings vibe, with Slithe and his reptilians in the role of Sauron and the orcs, laying waste to the ‘Cats homeland.

There have also been some changes to the characters—Tygra is Lion-O’s adopted brother, and Cheetara is a stone-cold Ninja-like warrior. Snarf has been backed away from the narrative (thankfully!) and it looks like Jaga might have a larger part to play. I can’t wait to see what they’ve done with the Thunderkittens.

Let’s hope this series is a huge success. If it is, and is followed by a good animated feature, we might finally see the Thundercats live-action movie that die-hard fans have dreamed about for so long.
