WonderCon 2011: Saturday (200+ Photos!)

What a difference a day makes! WonderCon was bursting with great costumes on Saturday. I was thrilled walking around photographing awesome cosplayers for twelve hours, and had a wonderful time at Saturday night’s costume masquerade. Since I’m a big fan of Nip/Tuck, I was excited when I stumbled upon Robert LaSardo at WonderCon. He was also kind enough to pose for a photo. Thanks, Escobar!

Flaky Friends sold a delightful variety of plush toys created by Sarah Flake, all of which have their own personal issues. I couldn’t resist owning Kitty Ball, who can be seen between the two middle toys on the right banner.

Batman isn’t allergic to Poison Ivy.

The booth of Primitive Screwheads, a performance troupe that brings live action horror adaptations to the stage. Fans of The Big Lebowski will also want to check out their parody, Much Ado About Lebowski, this summer in San Francisco.

They even had a fun photo op next to their exhibit. Smells good, man!

Silk Spectre was one of the most watched Watchmen at WonderCon.

As you can see, WonderCon was a haven for acquiring 3DS StreetPass tags. I’m nearing the end of the Find Mii minigame thanks to all the characters I met over the weekend.

One of the most popular events on Saturday was the costume masquerade towards the end of the night.

Two Minions from Despicable Me were dancing in the audience.

The event was sponsored by the movie Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, so director Kevin Munroe took to the stage with stars Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington took to the stage to kick off the festivities.

Acclaimed artists and writers Kaja and Phil Foglio volunteered their time as announcers for the masquerade.

The masquerade began with an action scene from the DC Universe.

Bane attempted to break the backs of White Lantern versions of Kid Flash and Green Arrow.

Thanks to an assist by White Lantern Hawkman, the heroes were victorious.

Up next was a gorgon, who sang about her love of roleplaying.

Arkham Asylum is now accepting minors for institution.

Lady Mechanika fought off an attacker as part of her stage time.

This female Sith Lord twirled her double-bladed lightsaber and received declarations of love from some members of the audience.

Another one of the contestants who walked across the stage.

The next skit started out with a lone woman waiting by a gaslight.

Unfortunately for her, she was going to be Jack the Ripper’s next victim!

The Gotham By Gaslight version of Batman quickly swooped down and saved her life.

Two stars from How to Train Your Dragon had an argument that led to an amusing slap fight.

Mass Effect 2′s Garrus Vakarian calibrates his rifle.

Garrus was one of my favorites from the masquerade, but unfortunately this was the best shot I managed to get of the turian.

The man called Cable attempts to combo into Viper Beam.

An Emma Frost cosplayer was a good sport when there were technical difficulties with the audio.

This skit adapted the meeting of the two leads from Disney’s Tangled.

Another one of my masquerade favorites was Kira from the Dark Crystal.

The leaders of the Inhumans, Black Bolt and Medusa.

The heroic Roman Mark Antony showed off his expertise with the sword and shield.

Medusa strutted across the stage to the beat of Nelly Furtado’s Maneater.

Daredevil showed no signs of fear as he went in front of the spectators.

The Rabbids caused a ruckus on stage and were a favorite of the Foglios.

She was the first of two Hit-Girls in the masquerade.

Leia and Wicket danced to the infamous Surfin’ Bird.

Poison Ivy makes her play for the crowd’s appeal.

The second Hit-Girl, who lip-synced a profanity-laden speech from Kick-Ass.

Several Vocaloid cosplayers took to the stage and performed a dance.

The other half of the group, which included Hatsune Miku.

Bank superhero Dollar Bill from Watchmen didn’t need to worry about getting his cape trapped in a revolving door.

This act started in the darkness before neon lights illuminated Disney characters from the Grid.

Once the lights came on, they burst into a dance to the theme from the Mainstreet Electrical Parade.

The brainwashed blond Jill Valentine from Resident Evil 5.

Wolverine was blasted to a galaxy far far away by Phoenix and became Bub-a Fett!

After posing for the crowd, Logan removed his helmet and lit up a stogie.

This Star Wars cosplay group performs lightsaber battles for charities.

Using the tactics of a Steven Seagal movie henchman, each member faced off against a Sith Lord.

After over two decades, Darkwing Duck returns! Man, I can’t believe it’s been that long…

Another masquerade participant spreads the love with a stage dance.

The final act of the evening ensured that I’ll return to the masquerade at future WonderCons. It started with a meeting between the evil vampire trinity of the Count from Sesame Street, Carmilla from Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, and Edward from Twilight.

As New Order’s Confusion played on the speakers, Blade appeared to challenge the vampires.

The Daywalker proved to be no match for the power of Robert Pattinson and company.

Suddenly, Richter Belmont and Jonathan Morris rushed in to rescue their fellow vampire hunter.

The two Belmont clansmen were also on the receiving end of a beating.

Julius Belmont emerged and managed to defeat Edward and Carmilla.

The Count was having none of that, and his eyes blazed red with evil as he grew in size.

The Belmonts united to fight the Count with renewed effort.

A horrible shot of the fireball that the Count hurled across the stage at his foes.

Our heroes soon countered with Hydro Storm, and finished the Count with Blade’s aid.

As the crowd went wild, the judges announced that they would take a break to determine the winners.

During the interlude, the audience was treated to several fan-made Star Wars films. Needing a break from the theater, I resumed my search for cosplayers.

This was the only Tifa cosplayer I managed to find at WonderCon.

I was slightly disappointed when Krista didn’t win a trophy.

The Star Wars group won a trophy for Best Novice.

The Tangled ensemble received the Most Humorous award.

Gotham By Gaslight Batman earned a trophy for Best Workmanship.

The award for the best original design went to Medusa.

I was pleased to see Garrus winning Best Re-Creation, as was most of the audience.

Gotham’s Little Rascals received the prize for Judges’ Choice.

WonderCon 2011′s Best in Show award went to the Castlevania group. Congratulations, folks, you deserve it!

He offered to show me a magic trick, but I declined.

Wow, that was a long one! I guess you can see why it took a little longer than normal for me to post this photo blog. WonderCon continued for one more day, so check back later for my event photography from Sunday.

After seeing some of the masquerade entries here. I am definitely regretting not entering. Doing it next year for sure
