Errata: One or Two players

darci asked: What’s your favorite game for two players? I’m looking for something fun and relatively casual as a nice go-to for my husband and me.

Not Lost Cities. Actually, one of my favorites right now is Jaipur. It’s a great little card game (which I reviewed previously) where you play merchants. Good interaction and quick to play. Carcassonne: the Castle is also good if you like the Carcassone base game.

darci also asked: Have you ever played a board game solo, and/or do you know anything about how it works and if it’s any fun? In your opinion, does playing alone lessen the fun of a good game, or is it just different kind of fun?

Agricola, La Havre, and some others are playable solo. Usually, they alter the rules slightly and the point is to avoid the challenges while still getting the most victory points. While they are enjoyable as one player games, they become much more puzzle like. Rather than competing with other players, the goal is about what resources to take when to maximize your ability to build/ship/get points. I’ve played both of the above games solo, and they are fine. But they lose something without the other players. I don’t think they are any more fun than would be a logic puzzle or sudoku or something of that nature.

Thanks for the response! I think we’re going to need to try Jaipur. Will let you know how we like it. :)

seriously, am I the only HeroQuest fan in America? Why do you think this classic “begginers D&D” didn’t catch on in the U.S. like it did in Fortress Europa?
